After hours of waiting for activation and much frustration I found out what my trick was too get my iPhone 3GS activated.

I used my old SIM card. It had “3G” written on it. So if you have an older phone or a different provider, this may not work for you. I’m thinking maybe if your sim CARD works AT&T doesn’t actually expect you to use the one that shipped with the phone?

Other tricks I found while trying to solve my solution were people are popping their sim in and out, and some are doing a hard reset. I guess with millions of people it goes to show that there are a lot of different things that can go wrong.

Good luck!

Also people have been having luck going to http://www.att.com/activations and activating.

  1. I don’t think using your old SIM is the answer. I just did this, and it works but my new plan hasn’t kicked in because I don’t have data access. I blocked data access on my old LG CU500v, and my account doesn’t show any of the new information.

I’ve tried restoring the phone, hard resetting, you name it. It just won’t activate. My guess is the new SIM that was in the phone when it came is associated in some way with my new plan. I can’t believe they don’t have 24 hour support… is it that they don’t make enough money? Not enough subscribers? What’s the deal here? Sounds like they just suck at customer service.

The at&t activation site said “Our records indicate that all wireless numbers have been upgraded for this account. If you feel you have reached this message in error, please call 1-800-331-0500 for assistance.”

If I wanted to continue complaining I’d go on to say how much of an explicit ripoff it is that text messages aren’t in the data plan, and that if ATT really thought refurbished iPhones met the “same standards” as new ones they’d give the full year warranty instead of a measly 90-day one. There’s more to complain about but I’ll leave it at that… I have web development to do still tonight.

I just needed to vent because I was looking forward to getting this working today and now I can’t. I hope it’s a good first comment for your post!

  2. Had to call them to get it activated. At&t screwed up.
